We recommend following your state and local guidelines for group gathering sizes and activities. The following suggestions for small group activities should be based on the guidance from your state and local health departments and other relevant organizations. If group activities are not permitted in your area, see our list of virtual event ideas for suggestions on what to do for Senior Day.
1. Try a 15 Minute Workout — this great exercise video provides a fun 15 minutes of exercise, specifically designed for older adults. Participants will need a hand towel, light hand weights (or bottled water, or soup cans), and a sturdy chair with arms (and no wheels!) to complete the routine.
2. Do a Whole Grain Word Scramble Race — pair up participants or have them complete this word scramble individually—and race to the finish! All of the answers have to do with whole grains that are good to include in a healthy diet.
3. Host a “Zoom Room” — see if any local fitness instructors would be willing to do a chair yoga class, Zumba lesson, or other type of activity on Zoom so your members can follow along and get some exercise.
4. Try Tai Chi Exercise — this introduction to tai chi video from Sit and Be Fit shares some simple movements from this ancient exercise that work well for seniors. Exercises can be done either standing or from a sturdy chair.
5. Host a Poetry Reading and Discussion — stimulate the brain with a poetry reading and discussion of Robert Frost’s “The Road Not Taken”. This website has the text of the poem, a poem guide, and an audio recording of the poem being read. (There are other poet options as well.)
6. Take a Sidewalk Hike — if the weather is cooperating, take a “hike” outside. Engage the brain by asking participants to take note of what they see along the way. Have them write down observations upon their return, and then share with the group. A great mind/body activity!
7. Do Some Flexibility and Cool Down Exercises — 4 exercises for increasing flexibility and cooling down. Hand towel and sturdy chair needed. (Note: Some floor work)
8. Focus on Relaxation — take a time out with the group to relax and unwind. Dim the lights, have everyone close their eyes and listen to the sounds of nature. Choose from rain and thunder sound therapy, ocean waves, and other soothing sounds.
9. Learn Some Balance Exercises – this video shares three simple balance exercises for older adults. Do these together as a group.
10. Invite a Socially Distanced Speaker — ask a podiatrist, nutritionist, pharmacist, or other professional to come and do a short presentation—at a distance! (You could do a Zoom presentation instead if they are willing.)
